Serenata Mexicana - A Love Letter Turned Into Music

En México cualquier día es bueno para celebrar el @mor.

Corazones, flores y chocolates, podrán marcar el día de los enamorados en ciertos calendarios, pero cuando l@s mexican@s se enamoran…cantan, sin importar la fecha.

Cantamos de amor y de despecho, de alegría y de pena, de aniversario o despedida, para despertar el corazón o para dormirlo, con mariachi o con trío, con guitarra o a cappella, con amigos o sin ellos, con tequila de por medio o sin antestesia, pero cantamos.

De todas las opciones para cantarle al @mor, creo que la serenata es la más atrevida y sincera. Hay que tener mucho valor y mucho corazón para entrarle.

No cualquiera se presenta (por lo general) en medio de la noche para soltar los sentimientos…debajo de una ventana, a media calle, en un lugar público…

Pero esa es la razón de ser de las serenatas. Después de todo, como dicen por ahí, si lo sabe Dios que lo sepa el mundo.

Y ni qué decir de quien recibe la serenata. Las serenatas siempre son sorpresa.

Pienso que una buena serenata incluye 3 elementos.

El primero es tener un bueno motivo, uno no lleva serenata nada más porque sí y a cualquiera, para bien o para mal una serenata es especial. El segundo ingrediente son los músicos; sean mariachis, trío o la guitarra del vecino, una serenata necesita coro.

Y el tercer elemento, quizás el más importante, es la selección de las canciones, ahí es donde se dice lo que se necesita decir, y ahí también es dónde se produce la magia que hace que una noche cualquiera, en cualquier rincón del mundo, algún mexican@ cante aquellas canciones que por generaciones y a pesar del tiempo y de las modas, siguen diciendo te @mo o ya no.

In Mexico any day is a good day to celebrate love.

We don’t wait for Valentine’s Day…when we are in love we say it, loud and clear...and we do so through music.

And not only that, we do it boldly, in the form of a serenata (serenade).

We have love songs and songs for the broken hearted, we sing about the joy and the pain that love (sometimes) brings, we sing to celebrate an anniversary or to say adios, to wake up the heart or to let it rest; we sing with mariachis and trios, with the help of a guitar or a cappella, along with friends or by ourselves, with a few tequilas in between or without any help, but boy do we sing.

Serenatas are definitely not for the faint of heart. Think about it. It takes a lot (A LOT) of guts to show up at your love’s door, (usually) in the middle of the night, to sing your heart out, standing beneath a window, in a very public space (usually the street)…

But serenatas are meant to be bold expressions of love and one key ingredient is the element of surprise it brings to the intended recipient.

I think that a good serenata would also require the following:

First, there must be strong reason behind it. It’s a very special gift, meant for a very special person. You just don’t do this sort of thing for anyone.

Next is choosing the musicians. It can be a mariachi band, a trio or even your nextdoor neighbour and his guitar. It all depends on your personal taste and budget. But the one thing you don’t do is to bring a serenata alone. A serenata requires company, chorus, to sound its best and to ensure you are heard.

And the last, and perhaps, most important element of a good Mexican serenata, is the playlist. The songs you select will set the tone, so pay attention to what you are singing! The songs are the message, your love letter turned into music. That’s were you say it all and it’s also through those songs that the magic of a serenata comes alive. The magic that makes it possible that any given night, in any corner of the world, two souls connect through the lyrics that have brought people together for generations. Music that, despite the passing of time, continue to say te @mo…or not.
