#10 Sergio y Paloma - Yes, we can

Sergio Juárez Correa es maestro de primaria en Matamoros, Tamaulipas.Tiene 31 años.
Paloma Noyola Bueno tiene 12 años, fue su alumna y obtuvo en 2012 el primer lugar nacional en matemáticas en la prueba Enlace. Sus compañeros también sobresalieron.
La historia de Sergio, Paloma y su clase destaca este mes en Wired magazine, revista líder en ciencia, tecnología e innovación.
Sergio encontró, con dedicación e ingenio, la manera de encender una luz y hacerla brillar sobre la mente de sus alumnos con más fuerza que la dureza de sus circunstancias.
Su inspiración fue el trabajo de otro profesor, un maestro de tecnología educativa de la  Universidad de Newcastle en Inglaterra, que con éxito aplicó sus conocimientos en escuelas de escasos recursos en la India.
Motivado por esos resultados, Sergio puso en práctica el método, enseñando a sus alumnos a pensar con libertad y creatividad, a trabajar en equipo, a resolver problemas por sí mismos.
Les contó de niños en otras partes del mundo que pueden componer sinfonías, construir robots y diseñar aviones. Pero sobre todo los entusiasmó para enfocarse en su potencial y no en sus limitaciones. 
La historia de ambos es una lección que va de México para el mundo.

Sergio Juárez Correa, 31, is an elementary school teacher from Matamoros, Tamaulipas.
Paloma Noyola Bueno, now 12, was one of his students and in 2012 obtained the highest score on the national test known as Enlace. Her classmates also had impressive results.
The story of Sergio, Paloma and their class is featured in Wired magazine this month. Wired is a leading publication on ideas, science and innovation. The main focus of the article is a new teaching method that could, according to the magazine, unleash the potencial of millions of children around the globe.
Sergio found a way to shine a new light upon his class. He came across information describing the work of a professor at Newcastle University in the UK, who developed and implemented new education techniques in India with great results.
With enthusiasm Sergio began applying some of that knowledge, teaching his class to think freely, encouraging creativity and team work, and asking students to come up with their own strategies to solve problems.
He  also told the class about children in other parts of the world who could write symphonies, build robots, design airplanes. But more than anything, he made them believe in their own potential, despite their circumstances.
Their story is a lesson we all can learn from.
