#7 Esos refranes - Those Mexican proverbs

Mi abuelo Enrique era un coleccionista de refranes. Los usaba en la vida diaria y los aplicaba para todo. Muchas veces, en medio de alguna conversación los rescataba del olvido y los arrojaba al viento, como cartas de una baraja que al caer nos hacían reír ó reflexionar. Siempre le admiré ese talento e incluso hoy en día, cuando a veces me quedo sin palabras recurro a los refranes que recuerdo, muchos de los cuales aprendí de él. 

Los refranes son destellos de ingenio, reflejo de nuestra cultura y forma de pensar. Son frases breves llenas de sabiduría, chispa, humor y aunque muchos suenen parecidos a los de otros países también hay algunos que solamente un mexicano puede comprender. Por ejemplo ¿por qué bolsearon a Chuchita, quién es Chencha, qué prisa tiene la mocha?

Cuando estaba debatiendo la idea de escribir este blog, ese primer día cuando me senté frente a la computadora y contemplé la página en blanco, pensé: a darle, que es mole de olla. Y aquí voy.

My grandfather Enrique collected Mexican proverbs. He used them on his daily life and applied them to any situation. Often, in the middle of a conversation, he would toss the words up in the air like a deck of cards that would eventually fall on the table to make us laugh and think. I always admired this gift he had. A gift of popular wisdom. Even now, when I lack the words to express something I reach for one of those treasured phrases I learned from him.

Mexican refranes are a sparkling reflection of our culture and ideology. They are short expressions filled with wisdom, humor and wit, and though some may sound similar to those from other countries there many that can only be fully understood by a Mexican. For instance, why did Chuchita get mugged? who is Chencha? why is la mocha in such a hurry?

Not long ago, when I was deciding whether to write this blog or not, that day when I sat in front of the computer looking at an empty screen, the words that came to me were: a darle, que es mole de olla, a Mexican proverb which to us simply means: Do it! So, here I am.
