| No tanto pero casi |
Todo comienza como un juego.
A lo mejor tienes 4 años.
Un día te sientas a
comer y notas “el platito” en medio de la mesa,
junto al salero.
¿Eso qué es? Preguntas. Es chile. Te advierten.
Tú observas. Alguien lo prueba. La cara se le
pone roja, los ojos también. Comienza a sudar, pide una servilleta, sacude las manos como si tuviera un
calambre, a lo mejor suelta por ahí una palabrota.
Y luego lo escuchas pedir más.
El “platito” te intriga.
Un día te preguntan si quieres probar, o tú
lo pides.
Es chile, te previenen.
Dale un poquito, alguien dice.
No le pongas mucho, te recomiendan.
Una probadita, te animan.
Abres la boca y al instante aprendes una
palabra nueva: ¡PICA!
Te lloran los ojos, te pones roj@, tomas agua
o refresco o lo que tengas cerca, y sacudes las manos como si tuvieras
calambres.
Y luego pides más.
Ya comes chile, te felicitan, como si fuera
tu graduación.
Y de cierta forma lo es. Descubriste un nuevo
sabor y si te gustó ya nada será igual.

It all starts like a
game.
Perhaps you are 4
years old.
One day you notice the little bowl in the middle of the table,
right next to the salt.
What’s that? You ask.
Es chile. You are warned.
And you watch as
someone adds some to his food. His face turns red and so do his eyes.
He begins to sweat, grabs a napkin, shakes his hands and maybe even swears.
And then, he goes back for
more.
The little bowl piques your curiosity.
One day someone offers you some, or maybe you ask for a taste.
Es chile, returns the warning.
Give the kid a little,
someone says.
Don’t put too much,
they recommend.
Have just a bit, they
encourage you.
You open your mouth
and you instantly learn a new word: PICA!
And your face turns
red, and a tear drops, and you reach for water, and you shake your hands.
And you ask for more.
Ya comes chile! They
cheer with a smile, as if you had accomplished something important. And you
have.
It’s a milestone.
Your taste buds have found something new and if you like it nothing will ever
taste the same.
